Lots of fans absolutely despise the way their relationship deteriored, feeling like they presented her as some Mary Sue that was better than all his previous companions. But she wasn't. She wasn't perfect or better, she was what he needed when he was at his most vulnerable. More than loving her, he needed her, hence why he became so attached to her, perhaps more or at least in a different way than to his previous companions.
