I think that she is only able to feebly block out the rest of the world although it comes crashing down no matter what she does (the chorus's loudness in contrast to the verses and bridges). "Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming, cannot cease for the fear of silent nights" - If she was able to build her own world away from the one that antagonizes her, wouldn't she not be screaming? That's just my thought on this.
