I always thought this song was written as if Romeo and Juliet had survived, sort of a cynical song about how misguided the optimism and passion of youth is. Like, if they HAD survived, Juliet would have gotten bored with Romeo anyway.
I agree with this. They were still children, and if you put the story in the present day, the greater tragedy than early death (in context of a great love) would have been one leaving the other behind. Lost love: nothing is sadder and more poignant.
