I feel like this song is about a young couple getting hit with the recession.
That they've known each other for a while, and are now out in the real world, and the guy lost his job, causing them to fight and him to drink.

Well, they just sit down one night with cheap wine, talking all night about their problems, and saying things they haven't for a while (how much they mean to each other)

means that they now see each other at their worst, and its like they are meeting for the first time without the fluff of first teenage love. (Seeing them as a real person)
