I don't think this is right but it's just the way I interpreted the song. I actually thought it was about a father being divorced from his wife. This divorce had a thorough impact on the father and he did horrible things to the children. One of them (the middle child) can't take it anymore so he leaves. I think at the end, the boy comes back when he is grown up. His father is still there and sits in his chair and asks the question, where had you gone?
