Hmm.
I think people may be looking at this the wrong way. Maybe we shouldn't be assuming everybody feels love is a great thing.
I don't think he's talking about a break up or losing somebody. Rather, I think he's talking about losing himself, about not loving anymore, or at least, trying not to. Look, love is all, right? That's what everybody says. Well, my heart has learned to kill, he's saying. Not that he wants it this way, which is why the tears come. But something in him fights them, pushes them back, and so he lets them go.
Notice how he says he walks on the river like it's easier than land. This paints an image of a man who is of a different breed than other humans, doesn't it? Everyone loves. Everyone loves to love. That's normal. Like walking on land. But he's a little different. It's as if he walks on water. He knows this of himself, and it's almost as if he's warning other people, don't try to love me. He's got evil in his pocket, you see, and he'll throw your will into the current that he stands upon still.
Sort of reminds me of Chris McCandless, or Alexander Supertramp as he is more commonly known.
Also, when he says he can rise from the harness of our goals, I don't think he's speaking of the goals of he and some significant other. I think he's talking of the goals of your typical society. Those goals having to do with love and companionship. These goals are a harness, strapping him down, keeping him in. And he can rise from them, letting go of the petty human need of companionship.
Remember in The Wild Hunt, how he said time and time again how he plans to be forgotten when he's gone? I don't think he's looking for love, guys. I think he's looking to get away from it.
It's kind of funny, because when you glance at the track listings for the first time, not knowing what to expect from each song, you read "Love Is All" and you imagine he'll sing of how love is all there is worth having. But really, it's just the opposite.
Hope I don't sound too pretentious. I'm not trying to be.
In general i think you are right.. Except for the 'he doesn't like love'.. I just think he can't love.. That is why the tears.. but that is just how his heart has learned it..

And i kinda thought the river might be life?

And to your response on the hunt.. I noticed that too, but i just thought he didn't want to hurt the other person.. But this is the only way he know how to life..

I like both your, and Poelaurate13's interpretations are both great. Maybe my choice will define me more than the song lol (I put the same post on his interpretation too..)

Haha, hey krystyne10. I'm Sytch, just some guy. Yup, I guess I'm still alive. Does my tone really reek that strong of suicidal tendency? I swear, I've already decided not to, no matter how it all goes and gets!

Glad to see that people out there are still discovering The Tallest Man On Earth.

@sytch obviously this was written more than 12 years ago so your opinion may of changed.. I couldn’t help but comment though. It is an in fact a break up song about how being in love/loving another has a hurtful side.
I do love your interpretation of it as if we cannot love ourselves how the hell can we love anyone else? ????

yeah I agree with sytch. The line "Love is all, from what I've heard, but my heart's learned to kill" pretty much sums it up

I have to agree with you. I feel exactly the same! Music always puts my feelings into words so much better than I ever could.

Your interpretation is the only one that makes sense, even though FrankyFingers is right. Great, I don't have to think abou this anymore. :)
