This song is actually about my father who was a former band mate of dougs (pat schmaljohn aka pat brown) he is no longer alive and his cod is pretty obvious if you listen to the song. The song pat on their new album is about him also. They were wonderful friends and he is very missed.

(which probably says some negative things about the way I think and maybe I shouldn't admit this)... and I want to argue with everyone until the voice of reason reminds me that I am not always right, and a song can mean whatever each of us wants it to. The ambiguity of (some) song lyrics leaves it up to each of us and our emotions, mindset, etc. to determine what we believe...

The ambiguity of (some) song lyrics leaves it up to each of us and our emotions, mindset, etc. to determine what we believe the song to be about without ever really knowing exactly what the artist is saying, because it is such a personal thing to write a song and unless your audience KNOWS you, then none of them will really know exactly what is being said.
So today I read through all of these comments and came upon yours... and I learned something... and I thank you. This was always my favorite Built to Spill song and now I like it even more... it really makes sense as to where all the emotion comes from in the song... especially live.
