I think at its core the song isn't even about race, its about the inevitable feeling in youthful love that only each other understand you fully. It's about being lost and not caring what the world thinks or knowing that the only real place you have to be understood is with that person. Also about wanting to ignore real hardships that are hard to ignore because you love someone but knowing deep down eventually they will take their toll whether you as a couple survive them or sepperate.
Tho obviously the universal appeal of the song in everyone feeling like they don't fit in and being lost in love is wrapped in the more personal story of interracial love and a family that doesn't understand i think mostly the underlying meaning affects most people because to be honest most people I know haven't been in that exact situation and lost everything for someone they knew they likely still wouldn't have forever.
