I think any song is open to any interpretation by anybody. To each his or her own! If it means something special and important to a person, but it means something wholly different to another but still equally special and important, so be it.
To me, it's a long distance relationship in which the singer gives a lot more affection than is returned.
And again, to me, the singer wants to not care about it, to be all right with being the one who calls, but it's not. And it hurts.
