The song is about being a dreamer. In order to achieve what you want, in this case being a rapper, you need to have dreams and have the perseverance to achieve them.

At first I thought B.o.B was comparing his former life to his new one, but I can see he's explaining something different. First, he talks about his life now, at least a version more perfect. In the second verse he tells people if they pretend his past wasn't full of dreams and hard work, where would his life be? Definitely not being the rapper he is now.

Eminem focuses on the struggle and the pursuit of achieving dream. He pretty much explained why his life was hard growing up with no one to turn to and no outside motivation. The only thing fueling him are his dreams of trying to get into the rap scene and becoming famous. He could have made excuses about his lack of friends and family and thrown in the towel there, but instead he followed his dreams and made it.

The shooting star wishes aren't just, "I wish I was famous." Everybody has wants. They are symbols for motivation. Nothing is ever going to just fall onto your lap, and they know that. But what motivates a person more than having dreams? I mean, I'm just an 18 year old programmer, but there's nothing that I want more than to be the next Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, or next major player in the programming industry. I am getting by on my dreams, just like they did.

So yes, it is about their struggles, but the overall meaning is about having dreams. Dream big and work hard or fall into a life of mediocrity.

woow! That's it. Beautiful words, good luck with your dreams :)
