I think this song is about two parents trying to raise and support their kids.

I take that as their dad selling his guitar. he has a dream of making music but gives it up to keep the electricity on and family going
and the "love was alive in the olden days, put to death in this golden age by a coloured tv" is the parents who are so sad from struggling to keep their family going and buying goods like new tvs that the love is gone.
