Lyric discussion by tsreyb

Lyrics pretty much speak for themselves - basically just another broken hearted love song.

However, the song's "just another" aspect begins and ends with its lyrics. Everything else about this song is nothing short of stellar. Beautiful singing, awesome harmonies, well-crafted arranging and rock-solid production. This classic tear-jerker of a song owes its longevity to all these fine qualities.

I especially appreciate the superbly emotional, yet never over-the-top, singing from both Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. Decade after decade, pop singers try to outdo themselves with overblown, manufactured emotion (& ridiculously pained facial expressions and excessive hand movements).

Yet there have been a few amongst the crowd who communicate ten times the emotion with one-tenth the effort. These few are pop's finest gemstones. This song features two such gems.

We lost Donny way too soon :(
