I think it has something to do with the next part as well: big love is kinda an odd or obscure show. If youre with someone new or who you can't completely trust youre not going to watch something now considered kinda crappy or talk about a show about poloygamy if your trying to give them a good impression of you. There's something utterly obsolescent about the device, something decayed or decaying, something just plain old.
At the same time, there's something comforting and unassuming about the VCR. I can't tell which they're going for.
