Lyric discussion by VinnieBagaDonuts

This is the first time I've heard it and I think it is wonderful. I love how it is written in first person point of view as if it is a letter to someone very close to the singer. These types of songs are much more personal; another good example of this type is four strong winds.

It sounds to me like the singer is directing this towards someone very close to him, but not a partner. The singer in this case sounds like he had some bad times previously maybe due to a love interest, but now he is reassuring someone close to him that he is no longer in a bad way and recognizes that better times are ahead. By telling this person they could sing the song when they are gone, he is saying that although there will be sadness in his absence the person should remember there will be better times ahead and they will meet again someday. The singer achnowledges that he has a limited time-span in this context, and that the other person will be alone after he is gone.

The person who is afraid to close their eyes in this song could be afraid that they are going to lose the singer.

"And no one's gunna take that time away, you can stay as long as you like...."

It's a song of reassurance. Simply wonderful.
