Saw them in concert about a year ago at Cats Craddle in Carrboro,NC! Amazing concert! Rhett Miller, the lead singer said this song was about Ryan Adams, the musical artist. The story revolves around how The Old 97's helped get Adams' career started however once he made it big he completely left the Old 97's high and dry! This lead to one of the main reasons I am not a fan of Ryan Adams!
They both hung out with Winona Ryder, too, so "the girl I used to have" line is funny. (Ryan Adams claims he never dated Winona, but that he is good friends with her.) Rhett Miller seems much more mentally healthy than Ryan Adams, so I am never surprised by negative stories about the latter. However, I am a big fan of the music of Old 97's and Ryan Adams alike.
