It meant, like "cool" and "deep" together. It meant, hey, this is not shallow or casual or petty, it's heavy and strong. So, songs were "heavy" with both cool and deep meanings. If someone was heavy, they were deep, had lots of levels and were not easy to fathom. But the song is most likely about Yoko, who was extremely intellectual and an international person of note. John had very strong feelings towards her. He dug her. Deeply, heavily. He still does (ooh - now that's heavy!)
