I think the meaning of the song is pretty clear, but it's made more complex by the way the song seems to be written for a woman to sing. Obviously though, Mr Mumford does a great job with it.

This is the song you would write when you realise the other person in a relationship doesn't actually care about you that much, and is moving on to someone they will take seriously.

"But tell me now, where was my fault In loving you with all my heart"

Perfectly sums up the feelings of humiliation and confusion you experience when this happens to you. I say "when" not "if", since I think this particular experience happens to everyone sooner or later!

But in a way it's a very optimistic song. Although the singer has been cheated and left, they have retained their integrity. I particularly like the line "Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole lie;" (actually, I think that's meant to be "life") because it's saying that you were the one with noble intentions and feelings. It's saying you would commit your all for an honest lover.

I love this interpretation. Maybe because this situation just happened to me, I don't know, but it seems to fit perfectly. This song hits so so hard and I agree with this 100%.

why does this seem as if it was written for a woman to sing? This song is all obviously written from a man's point of view, stating that no matter how tough men are or appear, even the toughest have or have had emotions this profound.
