Lyric discussion by SuddenlySeymour

GOD, I love this song so much. Adam Dubberly is a beast.

First off, "bad to kiss you" is actually "masochistic," which means "A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences." Also, "but it's more painful than I'd ever like to have it" is "but it's more painful than I'd like to admit."

Let's take it verse by verse...(some of these are going to sound obvious, sorry)

"Since March of last year, everytime I go to sleep, You're always right here next to me, Whether I stay up late or I go to bed early, you're in my life until I wake up in the morning."

"And I don't know if I love it or I hate it, It's more painful than I'd ever like to have it. It's -masochistic- but it's almost really worth it to be able to be with you for even one more moment. "

He's in love with this girl to the point of imagining her next to him while he sleeps. She's left him, and it hurts him so much that even the things he does to console himself (the imagining) aren't all that consoling (almost really worth it). He doesn't know how to feel about what he's doing to himself.

"And everytime I have to wake, I come to terms with my actual fate. That the only thing lying next to me is a couple books and a pile of cd's. I open my eyes and begin to return from either the past or a future that could have been. Even though it's been almost a year now, It's like you've left me all over again."

The fact that he had her (and/or COULD have had her in the future if things had gone differently) haunts him. He's alone (books and CD's next to him instead of a different girl). It's been "almost a year" but the wounds are still fresh.

"And just last week, and also last September, We were sitting in a crowded vintage theatre. I can't remember what was up on the screen, when You moved your body in closer to me, and said, 'I think it's time that we stopped pretending that you were born to be sitting here next to me, that we're not in love with each other.' I think it's time that we got back together."

It sounds like they were married, and she divorced him. She flat out tells him that she doesn't love him, that they aren't meant to be, and they should stop acting as if they are. That last line, however, him saying that he thinks they should get back together - he isn't over her. "Just last week and also last September, could either mean that they broke up and then got back together OR reiterate the fact that it's still incredibly fresh on his mind.

And then the chorus, and the la la la's.

And...that's my lengthy interpretation of an AMAZING Adam Dubberly song. :)
