This song defines my life! Except I didn't find what I'm looking for...
I heard it in the trailer of a movie called "Away We Go". By the way, if you're into soft, indie movies, and you love Alexi Murdoch (he did the whole soundtrack!), listen to this movie. VERY touching and cute!
Sorry you didn't find what you're looking for, hope you do. It's unclear what exactly he finds in this song. And the "promise that WE made" gets me because who's the "we"? Someone said the song's about death, I don't get that impression, seems more like finding a mate for life, though the wording does suggest it could be a higher power. It certainly seems to be about the questioning in life, the big questions, and frustration at our imperfections and the disappointments (no friends around for example). And whatever he finds at the end...

I believe that God (Jesus) is what we're all searching for, even if we don't know it, and that in the end He does satisfy (and certainly is there "all of our days"). This song is beautiful, but it is just unclear whether that's what the singer is finding, or something else. A lot of Alexi's songs have this abstract nature to them, I guess that's his style.
