He's just tried (successfully or unsuccessfully, we don't know, but I lean toward thinking she wised up and got out okay) to persuade his girlfriend, whom he loves truly but obsessively, to commit suicide alongside him. He's deluded by his religious upbringing into thinking the afterlife will be much better than his actual life.
