Lyric discussion by StudyinScarlet

I've always interpreted this song to be about one of those rare dreams you have where either a real or imagined girl is absolutely perfect for you. It doesn't matter what you're doing with her, you're having an incredible time.

"You're just like a dream..." being some forshadowing.

Then, the bridge going:

"Daylight licked me into shape I must have been asleep for days And moving lips to breathe her name I opened up my eyes And found myself alone Alone Alone above a raging sea That stole the only girl I loved And drowned her deep inside of me"

Being that feeling when you wake up and feel like you've had the longest, most intense dream ever. And realizing the "dream girl" doesn't actually exist or even have a name that you know.

The raging sea being your mind, where that perfect girl from your dream has now been lost forever.

I'd never even considered that the song's about oral sex, this makes a lot more sense to me.

@StudyinScarlet Yep. After listening to the song for years and not thinking much about the lyrics as a cohesive thing until recently, this is the interpretation I came to as well. Well put.

@StudyinScarlet I had one of those dreams the other night. Thought of this song and this comment (which I've read before). I always thought this was the best interpretation of the song, because I've had those dreams before.

Something about the empty feeling I had yesterday morning when I woke up solidified it for me. Usually I just brush it off, but I still feel kind of upset.
