As several people have said, this song is based on the Deverry Series by Katherine Kerr and I know this is true because Sharen Den Adel said so when Within Temptation performed live at Astoria in 2007 and I was about 5 feet away from the stage at the time.
The song is written from the point of view of an old man called Nevyn (Translates a "No One") who in his youth was engaged to the most beautiful girl in Deverry, called Brangwen. Unfortunetly, due to various things going wrong, Brangwen ends up dead and Nevyn blames himself.
Nevyn swares an oath that he won't rest until he has repaid his debts to Brangwen, so the Lords of Wyrds grant him an unusualy long life so he can do this. Eventualy Brangwen in reborn as are various others who were involved in the tragedy, but it takes several life-times to get things remotley sorted and by this time Nevyn is an old man and Brangwen has been reincarnated as a young woman called Jill (Gylian) which is why the song sounds so regretful.
...I'm not sure how the story ends because I've only got to book 3 (The Bristling Wood: Dawnspell) but it's all very confusing and the story will flit from a past life-time to the present life-time and people who were involved in the past (Like when Brangwen was reborn as Lyssa and she has a son. Her son goes off to study the Dweomer - or sorcery - with Nevyn) will show up in the present life-time and help out in various ways.
You couldn't be more specific! :-) I knew what the song was about but not that detailed! ;-) I just have a question : The man is reicarnated too or he has just longevity??? Send it to me as a PM ok? Thanks in advance and well done for your interpretention! ^_^

I am currently on the 15th book of the series and of course the last book. I read most of the series about 15 years ago but this was before the last books were published. I have always loved these books. In fact I found out about this song while looking at the entry for the Deverry cycle on Wikipedia. The song is beautiful although Jill's name in the book is Gilyan, it is pronounced the same as the song title.

The Wikipedia article is pretty good for explaining the series so I won't try. There is also a table of incarnations both on Wikipedia and the author's own website that helps when you are reading the book. I find that the Wikipedia one is actually more complete that the Author's. The flashbacks in the books are there to give background to what is happening in the part of the story that deals with the "current events. It never confused me but other have complained about the flashbacks being confusing.
That said this is a spoiler so don't read further if you don't want to know. It's not much of a spoiler since upon looking at the table of incarnations you could figure it out but ymmv. Nevyn does finally manage to keep his vow. He dies after some 400 years of life and reincarnates. His next life is harder and he himself has a tough time as he remembers being a Master of his craft and now he can't even do the basic stuff. It's frustrating for him and almost turns bad. I won't say any more so you have to read the book to find out what happens but in that life at least he gets the girl. Actually I love that even some of the bad guys in previous books realize their past sins and make amends. I started to admire some characters that I hated in other books. It's very satisfying.

Any questions?
