He wants to FEEL God's recognition, to TASTE the way God looks. He's trying to perceive God in SOME way.
Unfortunately, this seems to be a crisis of faith that ends badly. The singer seems rebellious against God by the end. His Bible is his own thoughts, and he lives by them, rather than living by the actual Bible. He was lost in the rainbows with God, but "our" (his and God's) "dreams were never made to last." He is separating himself from God. Note that he hasn't renounced his belief in God. His appeals were not addressed in the way he wanted, but he seems convinced that his past relationship with God was real. However, apparently unwilling to abide the perceived lack of answer to his appeals for further experience of God, he seems at the end to choose not to follow God. The song is hardly final - a belief in God which he seems to maintain coupled with his obvious belief that God is good and life with the experience of God is good lays a strong framework for the possibility that he will return to God one day.
