I was at a bar one night and my ex-girlfriend was there". Then he looked at Noah and said "You were there that night, you remember". Noah said "Yeah".
And he has said that most of his songs are written about ex-girlfriends. He says the band holed up in an apartment for a month and wrote them all during that time. And he has stated that it was during a time in his life when he found out he had some illnesses, his mother was diagnosed with cancer and he longterm girlfriend had broken up with him.
So, it's definitely about his ex - and apparently that night really happened.
