I think this song is about the father racing to the delivery room to meet his baby, or possibly driving to meet his son who could have been in trouble, and he realized how much his son means to him.

Describing how it feels to actually realize how much is son means to him.. makes you appreciate what you have.

This is the son talking, saying that he realizes it's hard out in the world and how he was ignorant for thinking he could take it on so easily, so he's asking to come home.
