Not sure what Roger's and Hammerstein meant exactly either but Carousel was innovative for its time, being one of the first American musicals to contain a tragic plot (about 10-12 years before West Side Story). The leading man dies but not before you find out that he hits the leading lady....it was played down of course but it was an abusive relationship and back in the 40's all you could really do was stick it out. Sad. So I don't think Amanda was far off in her interpretation (if you watch the video).
