I think people are hitting the nail on the head when they talk it's about death - indeed it is but it's not that blatantly obvious.
I feel that this song is more explaining the revelation he had during the time as a comic book writer during the 9/11 attacks. It was then that MCR spawned, and then that he decided he wanted to "spread a message".
He's previously mentioned being very spiritual/religious, evident in the time he was sharing about when he was around fifteen, he was held at gunpoint.
"I got held up with a .357 Magnum, had a gun pointed to my head and put on the floor, execution-style. No matter how ugly the world gets or how stupid it shows me it is, I always have faith."
So, I believe that a more personal experience is shared with the first verse(s).
The obvious references to the fallen people are of course, in loving memory of those who have died on September 11th.
