i think that the silence is actually murder.

it's literal as this small child has to watch his mother get beaten,

the only way he knows how to live is to stay out of the way,
but it kills him because of what the male figure is doing to his mother.
and the fact that until this moment he has said nothing,
and that she will most likely go on saying nothing,
keeping her silence,
will lead to her death.
