I think it is a twist on the classic Disney fairytales. When you think of a Disney fairytale, there is always some sort of barrier between the princess and her prince. In Enchanted it was quite obviously the two different women and maybe the different realms in which the couples were from. There is obviously the trademark fantasy of being soul mates, but it's set in the part where they are in that barrier and striving to be together. And it obviously fits the fact that, in the movie, there was a cynical view [Robert] of it all being pretend and he was "so close to believing" but then reality sunk in and his girlfriend comes back. I think the song can be taken in many different ways, mainly depending on whats on your mind, and can hit that spot in different contexts. It's a magical classic.
