I have definately noticed the Anti-God theme throughout Between the Never and the Now. i figured that "comet catcher" was a reference to someone like God or just a higher authority figure, like a president or hey, maybe it was even a scientist that talked some people out of their religion into believing in science, and then it turns out he's a crackpot.
But yeah, a cult would definately make sense. the title "Suicide Party" seems obvious now.
