I watched a 4 hour documentary on Petty the other day and they said that Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics came in with it and it was intended for Stevie Nicks to sing. I think he only had the line "don't come around here no more" written and Petty must have filled in the rest, so it's probably meaningless to him, as many of his songs are. i.e. he doesn't have to have gone through an experience to write about it.
oh yeah, Stewart is also the guy smoking the Hookah in the video.
