Lyric discussion by Swirlily

For some reason I think this song is about a drug problem, or a problem in general she had. Like, her "good old friend" is her addiction to drugs, and by seeing the sea come in, it was like her relapse. By not asking, he's worn himself out asking her to stop, and he couldn't possibly ask again.

Then by saying he likes the way she dances, he loves the way she is in her purest form, drug free, problem free. He loves her the way she is, and he's trying to convince himself that they will work it out, and that the problem will pass by.

The next part, hearing her word. Maybe she's said she'd stop, and he keeps remembering these words she spoke. Sinning in red could be wrath. Red referring to anger. He's angry that she broke her word.
