txfilmguy1 had it partially correct. These guys were offered a lot of money for a record deal, but turned it down in order to keep writing their own music. Their music really does mean very deep things to a lot of people, and they want to keep it that way. This "war", is them fighting record labels and the rest of hollywood trying to turn them into a "plastic band". They are not widely known, but those who do know them, better their lives with their music - there is no better way. FAME is not always better, in fact it is just vanity ("we can see right through, all of your charms"). Listen to the song, 'First Wave Intact', it really shows this war. This song is mainly about the other bands that do whatever they can to make money, even "blowing all the other kids away".
