Personally i think this song is about depression. "I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in"

Its probably caused by some major disappointment. Something that was important to him came crushing down, he failed to achieve his goals or something like that. "I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high, I tore my mind on a jagged sky"

This event made him depressed, he tried to snap out of it, maybe hang on to something else that made him forget (supposedly alcohol or drugs). "I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in I watched myself crawlin' out as I was a-crawlin' in"

He was at the "bottom of the pit", he finally realized what is happening to him. "I got up so tight I couldn't unwind I saw so much I broke my mind"

The last verse is about getting out of his depression and carrying on with his life. He realized that his disappointment isn't the "end of his world" "Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "Dead End" sign"

He refers to Memphis as a "state of depression". He leaves it and carries on with his life.

Of course its just my interpretation, it can be about something totally different. Once i heard its about experiencing LSD so... :)
