.....it's about finding what to do in life

"I'll never wanna come back from again"

Perhaps wanting something so perfect so as to not wish to do it again....

"And we really wanna be someone

Everybody said we were something

I wish I could feel like nothing's wrong"

We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. So the narrator feels it's so wrong, but knows that it was fantasy, though still wishes for it ((maybe?))

"Could we really be much better?

To whom do you compare?

And where will we go when we get there?"

Looking to the past, you look for how to be, and what ot improve, but all of your present actions....for whom do you compare? And if you do succeed in making something "new", where to from there?

"Cos' everyone I know

Is reaching for the peak of the volcano"

Volcanoes are destructive, obviously, but can create life in a better way afterward....so it's either

  1. Everyone is doomed to die and is slowly walking towards their end
  2. Self destruction is the answer to being "much better"

"Be careful of where you're walking

Beware of what you're wanting

Do you believe you can be strong?"

A word of caution, advising that your wishes best be well, and your will strong.

"Cos' we can burn it all down

Spread that fire around

Cover it up with pounds of ash"

It's about destroying that past, the comparisons, and creating anew, erupting the volcano. Covering the past with ash, (and building on it)

"Now I saw that lava blooming

Red stems and thorns are shooting

What are we doing standing here?"

This is the narrator seeing the falling action, and wondering if it was good or just. But he doesn't say that, he just cares about their position in relation to what occured.

This can be put into a number of interpretations, which make it so great, and it fits in with the movie as well...
