anyone who has been in a relationship where one party is willing to work out their differences but the other party isn't really concerned can relate. to have someone you love say "it's too much work/i don't care, let's just give up" is heartbreaking. to turn it into such an upbeat-sounding song is great.
i think the whole meaning is pretty obvious. she's tried to stifle her hopes for the relationship, but deep down inside she loves him and wants it to work. she's got "a belief in the life of [their] love." she wants him to come around and reward her hopes for trying; that he'll "really want to hold [her] hand." she doesn't want to admit that it's a dead-end, hopeless relationship (the "point of the song" is to say goodbye).
i absolutely love these lines and the way she sings them:
