This song is amazing. I'm so upset that no one has commented on it. Scythians were a nomandic people who resided on a steppe, and were part of ancient Iran. (Thank you, Wikipedia)
There are some mirrors to modern things in the lyrics (Halliburton attache cases, scotch garud macintoshes). I believe iandrew Bird is talking about artifacts, and how ours are made of materials that will be forgotten in a thousand years, unlike the Scythian articfacts, which are beautiful and mysterious.
There are indeed some modern references in this one, and i happen to know for sure what this songs about.
It was written early on during the Bowl of Fire tour. It was written for a young girl of Scythian descent we picked up out in rural Illinois. It was early morning, the sun was just coming up over a glowing field of wheat and we'd been up all night partying. Andrew had taken to calling her The Halliburton Attache as a joking reference to her boyfriends fondness of antique automatic weapons. Her kisses were useless as Andrew had been trying to provoke some jealousy out of her boyfriend, who didn't seem to mind at all sharing the girls affections.
The scotch gaurd Macintoshes is a reference to a bowl of stolen false fruit and the word culvinated had been picked up from a couple of Amish-ish kids (I dont know if they were genuinely Amish but they were something like that) So it was decided that we might as well culvinate them. I think it means "plant" them but i could be wrong and dont feel like looking it up.
