I think that this song is the feelings of uncertainty that you feel when you are about to bring a child in the world. In the beginning he talks about New York (Don't know if it is a 9/11 reference or not) and he says, "There's a hole in my pocket that's about her size" which I think means that he recently found out that the woman in his life is pregnant. At that point he is confident that everything will be fine. Then he talks about L.A. which I assume is when the narrator left to try and make it as a musician and he had to leave his pregnant girlfriend at home and cannot "drive to hear tonight". He then starts to doubt that evrything will be alright. Then the New Orleans verse, an obvious reference to Hurricane Katrina, then makes him look at the horrors of the world and makes him nervous about bringing a child into this world of people dying and starving because of our nation's inability to act. Then the last verse is after the baby is born. He is looking at the baby in the crib and realizes that nothing else in the world matters except for the baby. "And I know everything is gonna be alright. Yes, now I know it'll be alright"
