when i first heard this song, i looked up who mat kearney was, and found out he is a christian rock artist. ever since, i've been trying to interpret this song keeping this in mind.
so, i think that this song can be interpreted as being spiritual for the speaker. instead of a romantic partner, i think the "person" he is referring throughout the song may be God. I could get the idea that he has had some sort of religiious awakening, particularly from the following lines: "and i found myself in a bitter fight while i've held your hand through the darkest night don't know where your coming from but your coming soon"

(maybe he feels God was guiding him through the hard times, holding his hand) (also, a lot of christian people believe that Christ will come again, so maybe that is what the last line refers to) "come on and we'll sing, like we were free push the pedal down watch the world around fly by us come on and we'll try, one last time i'm off of the floor one more time to find you" (maybe singing refers to rejoicing song such as in a church choir. the rest of it maybe refers to him trying to find God)

I am not a religious person nor am i that familiar with Mat Kearney, but I think interpreting it in the religious/christian context works pretty well.

@mandmguess I think this comment is quite insightful. As a Christian familiar with the genre, it makes a lot of sense even with an autobiographical element, as I am sure there is. It makes sense that he is describing a journey and an experience with God probably through his life and through significant life choice(s). It's played on different contemporary Christian stations where the focus is worship and spiritual expression, so this fits the context.
