I think it's a pretty straight forward lyric about how the fans felt afterwards, although I suppose, as Morrissey was born in 1959, the "I wish I'd gone down, gone down with them" part could be taken to mean something along the lines of "I wish I'd never been born", although that's probably just me reading into things too much.
