That they are torn apart by the humdrum of life but yet struggle to keep each other optimistic and upbeat? They medicate and communicate (with pills and lies) even though they know that it cannot elevate them yet do not want to see the other person fall?

They probably lie to each other by telling the other "we're going to be ok, everything will be ok, we can make it through the hardships of everyday life".but the fact is they aren't ok, they're struggling so much they need sleeping pills to help them sleep at night. But they would never admit to their partner that the world is getting the best of them because maybe it's that lie that they are "ok" from their partner that is helping them make it through another day. It's a sad but hopeful song to me. A "at least I have your support even though the world is destroying us" song.
