I'm sure he didn't mean the words he's saying back then and so he is just pretending that he doesn't care. He said on "The Robbie Williams Show" dvd that he made his then girlfriend listen to it and she -of course- started to cry after it. He also said that if you look at the year it was written (1998) you would know who it was written for. So it means it was written about Nicole Appleton, I guess.
