The Yardbirds were the band that led to the development of a number of great guitarists that went on to develop hard rock/heavy metal music - Eric Clapton (Cream) - who in my view were the first hard rock band (in paralle to Hendrix); Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin which was the next generation of The Yardbirds and first true Heavy Metal Band (in parallel to Deep Purple) and Jeff Beck (Rod Steward / Faces, Jeff Beck Band, etc).
