it's her goodbye song to him. she acknowledges how things will never be the same because of his death. a lot of people miss that fact that a good bulk of her songs after his death are about him (ever before his death...Doll Parts started out as part of a letter she faxed him) and his death has dominated a large part of her emotional life. I can not come over to you can be in reference of two things...how she could not come to him right before he died, because she was in rehab, and how she cannot die and join him in the afterlife because she has responsibilities in life and other loved ones (Frances) and so he will have to wait for her. If you want food water shelter are all references to how she took care of him...should have stood in your way is a reference to how she feels guilty for not doing enough to stop his suicide (she chose to keep his suicidal tendencies secret...not even telling his Rehab Exodus...if they had been notified, they would have put him on suicide watch...then he wouldn't have been able to leave and kill himself...not that i blame her for his death, if someone really wants to die they will find a way) if you want the needle and the spoon is a reference to his drug habit...heroin. And most poignant and sad in the whole song is the end where she is softly singing goodnight and goodbye at the end. perhaps this is her way of finally laying him to rest in her mind and saying goodbye to him

I tend to see it as her farewell song to him too. I think the lines :

"and if I wanted fame now Or the glory of the womb And if I want my name emblazed on every light a new And if I wanted Christ Or a messiah by my side I can't believe in anything I know that Mary lied"

are amongst the most poignant she s ever written. There's a broken desperation about it, it's monumental.
