Here's what I think it's about:

The narrator (the captain) has lost everyone that he holds dear to him ("the storm took them all"), and he just wants everything to be like it was in the past. The only way he thinks he can do this is to die and go meet his freinds in the afterlife (the door he is infront of is the door to the 'beyond'.)

However, the doorkeeper (the child) won't let him in. Due to some previous deeds, he is doomed to live forever and tell his story to whoever will listen, so as to warn others.

If you have ever read the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, you can obviously draw parralells.
