This is my girlfriends and mine favorite line in the song, because, to us, it describes what we did. We were best friends for nearly a year before we ever became romantically evolved. We "worked for a paycheck" by building a base and foundation that was steady and reliable. We actually had to work on it, and still do.
Now, if you just win the lottery, you didn't do anything, you don't deserve it, you didn't work for it. It just fell in to your lap, and though it sounds nice, it rarely every happens. You can't just sit around wishing to win the lottery, because you'll just end up poor and alone. You have to get out there and work for your paycheck, and work on your relationship.
