Ok, first of all Tom Petty is form Gainesvile, Florida, not Indiana. Also I read an interview wiht him and he made it clear that he writes his songs in the perspective of another character so it's likely this song hasn't got much to do with his own life (although I'm sure the character in this song is closely linked to his life or is someone he knows very well)

I have a feeling this song has something to do with death- the last dance being the last minutes of a persons life on earth, "one more time to kill the pain" being doing something one last time to dull the sadness/pain of death, "Nightfall will be coming soon"- nightfall being death, or the end of an era in someones life "I hit the last number I walked ot the road"- meaning hitting the last big event of ones life and having no more reason to live, they "walk to the road"- meaning walk away from life

I think that maybe this song is chronicling a womans life, from the beginning of her adulthood (moved down here, the age of 18), to the end of her life, which is where the death part all comes in.

I may be readin too mcuh into it, and somewhere in there it has got to do wiht drugs, seriously, last dance wiht mary jane (marijiuna) one more time to kill the pain- get high and take away all the problems your going through...but I think the detah anaylisis is more accurate

I may be reaidn into this too much but let me know what you guys think...peace
