i would say that its an awakening story for the main character. He comes to see the devotion that people have to God eventhough they are dead, while "white tongues hang out". It doesnt really seem like a nice death to me from the way he describes it. And in my opinion, he realizes the reality of life and that there isnt a true God, because what kind of God would let people die? So i think he loses faith, and then says "God is good" from the perspective of the dead white boys. And he understands that he doesnt want to really be like them.
