I've been an Embrace fan for years... since back in the late 90s. They're KNOWN for their grandiose sing-along gospel like choruses. Anyhow... When referring to "ashes", I think he means it in the classical sense in regards to the phoenix rising from the ashes:

"Mythology. A bird in Egyptian mythology that lived in the desert for 500 years and then consumed itself by fire, later to rise renewed from its ashes."

This song is about overcoming all the shit that has happened to you. It's about being in control of yourself and letting the past simply be the past. It's about getting past all the bullshit that might drag you down. It's about emerging from a bad experience.

Embrace rocks -- i'm glad they're finally getting some recognition state-side. If you like this song, check out their debut album "The Good Will Out"... it's phenomenal.
