I read a recent article at the time of the albums release where Rob said he wrote this for his wife during a time when she had a 'lingering illness'. It didn't describe the illness but I think it is a very pretty song that shows he wanted her to know that he was going through this with her and he'd be right by her side during it all.
THIS IS CONFIRMED*** While watching an interview with Rob Thomas he was asked this exact question and he explained that he had met a fan a few years earlier who was diagnosed with Cancer. He met her back stage and spent some time with her as she was a massive fan. He said that 1 year later he received an email from her family saying that she had passed away. He said he wanted to say so much to her backstage, but couldn't be to personal hence the words (You were holding to me Like a someone broken
And I couldn't tell you but I'm telling you now)and(Just let me hold you while you're falling apart
Just let me hold you so we both fall down) Because she was such a big fan Rob says (Fall on me Tell me everything you want me to be). In that same interview Rob also spoke about 3am and writing it for his mother who had Cancer when he was 13 years old. He also went on to say he normally wouldn't say what a song is about, as it takes away it's universal meaning for others. He said he is happy that his songs can mean different things for different people.
